Buying land
The Canterbury Association’s plans for orderly settlement continued with the sale of land from the Land Office on the corner of Oxford Terrace and Worcester Street. Selections of land were made by ballot. The first selections took place on Monday 17 February 1851. Fifty blocks were available.

The establishment of Christchurch as the main town of the colony was an important part of the Canterbury Association's vision to transfer civilized values. to the new colony. In the first selection more land was bought in Lyttelton than Christchurch but this soon changed. By 1854 Christchurch had 900 residents and Lyttelton had 550 permanent residents.The Land Office was enlarged to include a Magistrates Court and it became the first office of the the City Council.
