Rich Colonists and Poor Emigrants
Upper class ‘colonists’ and lower class ‘emigrants’ paid different amounts of money to travel to Canterbury. As a result they stayed in separate accommodation areas which had very different conditions.

These images of the Randolph by Fitzgerald and the deck of The Charlotte Jane from the starboard quarter boat by Ship’s Surgeon Dr A C Barker, which he did on 25 October 1850, give us some idea of how small the ships were but they leave us with many questions about life-on-board. For example, they don’t tell us about the separate accommodation spaces for the rich and poor on board.
